Having one less cross string than its predecessor offered more spin potential, as did the added torque from the more flexible graphite and thinner beam.”

Tennis Tip of the Month by MCTC Coach Anuj Vimawala

Playing High Percentage Tennis

Last month, we saw an instant classic Wimbledon final between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. It seemed as though Federer would win his 9th Wimbledon title up 40-15, 8-7 in the 5th set. However, Djokovic battled through, facing multiple match points to come out victorious. Aside from being an inspiring performance from both players, players of all levels can glean several important concepts from looking a little deeper into the match itself. Tennis is a game of percentages, which means that even though you may have lost your last two points at net, if overall you are above 50% in points won, crashing the net should continue to be a viable strategy for the given set. I say set because statistics can also be misleading. A player could be averaging 70% first serves in for the match, but be closer to 40% for a given set. So when gauging what types of patterns and strategies to employ, think back to only a set at most. Often players get stuck in their own patterns that may have worked well to begin the match, but the effectiveness has since lessened as the opponent has adjusted their game. On the other hand, if you are mostly successful at serving out wide on a certain side, on more important points such as breakpoints or 30 all points, the opponent likely understands this and will do their best to prevent you from beating them with that type of serve. This was displayed in the men’s finals often as in break points when Djokovic would shift slightly to the middle to cut off any down-the-T serves that Federer had won so many points with. So in pressing situations, don’t hesitate to throw in something totally unexpected. Another thing that can be learned from the match is mental toughness. Both players were in difficult situations throughout the match, whether it be match points down or having been broken having had match points. Realizing that your opponent, too, is under mental duress can help you play slightly more freely or understand that if you force the issue by rushing the net off a slice or at another unexpected time, your opponent is likely to feel extra pressure which can cause a higher likelihood of an unforced error. Of course, players will come up with extraordinary shots under pressure on some occasions, but again, if you’re above 50% win rate in the past few games or the last set, applaud them and be confident in the fact that you have the advantage in that aspect of the match.
